John Becher was a wealthy merchant who came originally from Cork in Ireland. He served as Sheriff of Bristol in 1713 and then Mayor in 1721. Deeply involved with the slave trade, he and his sons ran a plantation in Kingston, Jamaica and they also owned (or part owned) Galleys.
