John Hare - 1813-1897 (Mayor 1861)


John Hare was head of the floor cloth manufacturing firm founded by his grandfather (John Hare 1817-1839) and was Mayor of Bristol in 1861.  he was at one time president of the Bristol Madrigal Society and was a magistrate, alderman and member of the Society of Merchant Venturers.  He was Mayor Bristol when the 'Downs' were purchased for the benefit of the City of Bristol. 

He was said to be a "fairly ready speaker, particularly when on the subject of music or aesthetic matters"1.

When he died, John Hare was buried in Arnos Vale Cemetery, Bristol.
