John Averay Jones - 1814-1896 (Mayor 1875)

 

John Averay Jones was born about 1814 and was the senior partner in the timber merchants, Jones & Nash.  He lived at Vale House, 81 Pembroke Road.  In 2008 a tree that he had planted in his garden had to be cut down because it was dangerous, the current residents located his grave in Arnos Vale Cemetery and placed some cones from the tree on it. He was Mayor of Bristol in 1875 and Master of the Merchant Venturers 1862-64.  He was president of the Grateful Society in 1867.
