James Poole was born about 1797 ans was the brother of Paul Poole R.A. He was a coal merchant with business premises in Hotwells and St Stephens Wharf and Mayor in 1858. He was also president of the Grateful Society in 1842. For a greater part of his life he lived at Wick House, Durdham Down where he died on 24th December 1872.
