Henry William Twiggs - 1855-1932 (Lord Mayor 1918)

 

 

 

Henry Twiggs was born in Bristol on 2nd December 1855.  He founded the business of H.W. Twiggs & Co. Bay Prams and Invalid Carriage Manufacturers in 1877.  According to the Western Daily Press 15th January 1932, he went into business on his own account at the age of 22 and by 1890 he has a second shop at No. 1 Stokes Croft and works in Philadelphia Street.  He became a councillor in 1890 but retired in 1896 then in 1900 is represented St Pauls Ward.  He was elected an Alderman in 1908... then resigned from the council in 1929.  He was a member of the Docks committee for 35 years and its chairman from 1908 - 24.  He became a J.P. in 1902 and was Lord Mayor in 1918.  He was president of the Anchor Society in 1912. He died on 14th January 1932 at Woodstock Road, Redland, Bristol.
