Henry Napier was the 6th child and 5th son of George Napier and Lady Sarah Lennox. He joined the navy partly in order to leave the village school and partly because he wanted to be in on the war against Napoleon - and win fame and fortune before it was all over, he was 14 years old.
He spent three years at Portsmouth Naval Academy before going to sea in 1806. He
served in Atlantic convoys, at Buenos Aires, at Copenhagen, in the blockade of
Brest, in the Far East and in the war with the USA in 1812.
