Sir Edward Burnett James - 1857-1927 (Sheriff 1900, Lord Mayor 1904, 1907)

 

 

 

Edward Burnett James was born in 1857, the son of Stephen James who was the senior partner in 'James & Pearce which merged with the Bristol Brewery Co. (Georges).  He married a daughter of Sir George Edwards and became managing director of the tobacco company Edwards Ringer & Bigg Ltd. and then a director of Imperial Tobacco Company Ltd when it was formed.  He was Master of the Merchant Venturers in 1895/6, Sheriff in 1900 and Lord Mayor of Bristol twice - in 1904/5 & 1907/8.  He was a conservative and was knighted on 9th July 1908 during the royal visit to open the Royal Edward Dock (when he was Lord Mayor).  He died on 27th December 1927, aged 70 years at his residence, Springfort, Stoke Bishop, Bristol.
